Global Disability Summit: NCPWD Reaffirms Commitment To Improved Quality Of Life For PWDs

The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD), Mr. James David Lalu has reaffirmed the Commission commitment towards improving quality of life for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) through the implementation of Global Disability Summit resolutions.

Mr. Lalu gave the assurance during a press conference to mark Global Disability Summit in Abuja.

Mr. Lalu said that in 2018, Nigerian government made Committee to 7 key issues on disability at Global Disability Summit.

Mr Lalu said “In 2018, the Government of Nigeria committed to 7-key issues on disability at the Global Disability Submit (GDS) in London, hosted by the Government of United Kingdom, Kenya, and the International Disability Alliance.

“One of such key commitments that has been achieved is the signing into the law the Prohibition Against Discrimination of Persons with Disabilities known as the National Disability Act.

“This culminates to the establishment of the National Commission for Persons with Disability, the admonition by the President of states government to domesticate the law which has come to fruition in about seven states in the country.”

“Despite this progress, many of its commitments still need to be met and financed to ensure that the rights of people with disabilities, especially from marginalized groups are protected and enforced worldwide.

“The GDS offers a concrete mechanism for collecting new ambitious and widespread commitments which are critical to achieving real change for person with disabilities across the globe.

“In the buildup of the GDS 2022 hosted by the Government of Norway, Ghana and the International Disability Alliance, organizations of persons with disabilities, led by the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities with support from Sightsavers and CBM Global held consultations to make their demands from us, the government.”
