In a monumental step towards empowering Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across Nigeria, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Abba Isa, presented appointment letters to state coordinators for the Beyond Disability Project. This initiative, aimed at creating 36,551 jobs for PWDs from national to grassroots levels, represents a major milestone in Nigeria’s push for inclusive development.
The event, which took place at a Documentation and Orientation Meeting in Abuja, symbolizes a critical phase in the Beyond Disability Project. This groundbreaking initiative was launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on July 22, 2024, underscoring the administration’s commitment to improving the lives of PWDs.
The BD-Project, pioneered by the SSA’s office, is structured to empower over 5,000 PWDs through extensive talent and skill development programs. By offering training, mentorship, and necessary resources, the initiative aims to unlock the latent potential of PWDs, thereby creating over 36,551 job opportunities in its implementation stage.
The presentation of appointment letters marks the beginning of the project’s rollout, with Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, and Jigawa states serving as the pilot regions. Coordinators in these states were selected by their governors and are responsible for setting up the required structures that will ensure the project reaches all corners of their states.
During the orientation, Hon. Abba Isa reminded the state coordinators that their appointments are more than mere titles—they are calls to action, service, and leadership. He stressed the need for the coordinators to focus on establishing talent and skill development initiatives, while ensuring that all PWDs benefit from the project’s opportunities.
The Senior Special Assistant also emphasized the importance of clear communication between state coordinators and the national team. “We will provide all the necessary support, but it is essential for you to remain proactive, innovative, and adaptive to the specific needs of your states,” Isa remarked.
Hon. Rodstick Steven, the National Coordinator of the BD-Project, provided a detailed explanation of how the project will create 36,551 jobs, breaking it down into six key components
State coordinators, in their goodwill messages, expressed optimism about the project’s potential. Delta State’s Omor Obruche praised the SSA’s leadership, while Jigawa’s Umar Faruk highlighted the initiative as proof of President Tinubu’s dedication to PWD welfare.
In conclusion, Barr. Yusuf Iyodo, Chief of Staff to the SSA, congratulated the coordinators, urging them to rise to the occasion and make full use of this opportunity to drive change in their communities.
