The Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) through the WOFAN ICON2 has commissioned a Centre for Women and Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in Jigawa State.
WOFAN also commissioned a Community Water Project to mark the 2024 World Peace Day in Kudai, Jigawa.
The Executive Director (ED) of WOFAN, Hajia Salamatu Garba, (WOFAN) while Commissioning the projects, said a total of 24 tricycles were also distributed to loaders and transporters, and a new solar-powered water source featuring 12 water was also provided for Kudai and neighbouring communities.
She said the initiative aims to address the water needs of over 500,000 households within the community of Kudai and neighbouring regions, who have relied on a dilapidated open well for over a century—a well now increasingly threatened by erosion.
“This significant intervention has been thoughtfully planned to coincide with the World Peace Day, and it is a direct response to the inspiring and heart-touching call from Ahmadu, a young man who, despite living without hands or legs, steadfastly pursues his livelihood rather than resorting to street begging.
“Our action in response to Ahmadu’s call reflects our commitment to fostering community growth through the WOFAN ICON2 Project, in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation.
“As we gather to commemorate this occasion, which aligns with World Peace Day, we also celebrate the promotion of a culture of peace”, Hajia Garba noted.
She further stated that their focus is on creating decent and sustainable job pathways for youth, emphasizing economic empowerment, and ensuring inclusivity for young women and individuals with disabilities, regardless of ethnicity, political affiliation, gender, or social status.
The WOFAN-ICON2 Project is a five-year initiative dedicated to generating decent and sustainable employment opportunities for youth, particularly women and persons with disabilities, aged 18 to 35.
This effort is part of the Mastercard Foundation’s Young Africa Works strategy, aiming to enhance the quality of life for young participants across ten Nigerian states.
“Today, we are glad to announce our commitment to empowering approximately 57,500 young individuals with disabilities (PWD) and 9,000 young agro-loaders and transporters across our targeted states in Nigeria happening concurrently to mark the 2024 World Peace Day.
“Here in Jigawa, we are undertaking the commissioning of Six Women’s Centres – all similar to the one we are commissioning in Kudai today.
“These six centres are located in Aujara, Yakasawa, Taraya, Gunka, Damatawa, and Kudai. They are fully equipped with seating facilities, water points, rice parboiling equipment, hammer mills for grinding cereals and producing flour, rice de-stoners, and rice polishers.
“Each centre will also benefit from two sets of 1115 motor engines and a startup capital of ₦1,500,000 to facilitate food processing, particularly crucial given the current challenges surrounding food security in our nation. In kudai, the center will receive N1,800,000 because they have 6 groups in their cluster.
“Today, we will distribute 24 additional tricycle carriers, each valued at ₦3 million, to our clusters of agro-commodity loaders and transporters who have diligently saved up to ₦450,000 in their accounts. Additionally, 40 individuals with limited mobility will receive hand-operated tricycles, enhancing their mobility and enabling them to engage actively in their daily pursuits with dignity.
“Additionally we are commissioning a women’s centre for the WOFAN ICON2 cluster in Kudai and surrounding communities. This centre has been equipped with parboiling equipment, rice and maize milling machine, rice de-stoners, and rice polishers.
“Adjacent to this facility, a marketing hub for PWDs in Kudai and neighbouring areas we are launching a solar-powered system to provide 24-hour electricity, charging points for motorised tricycles, mobile phones, barbershops, and other agro-businesses,” she noted.
