Fighters of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) at the weekend attacked Geidam town in Yobe State resulting in thousands of residents fleeing their ancestral homes to nearby Yunusari Local Government and Damaturu, the state capital.

Shots could still be heard 48 hours after the attack as the insurgents were engaged in gunfire with the military.

Some residents said that the insurgents boasted that they will dislodge a military base located in the town.

It would be recalled that on Saturday, 11 members of a family were killed when an explosive targeted at the insurgents landed on their homes. The victims were buried yesterday in Damaturu after fleeing parties evacuated their corpses.

An eye witness told this reporter that the insurgent arrived through the eastern part of the town  in more than 20 Hilux gun trucks.
