Stakeholders Meet In Abuja To Advance Effective Use Of Sign Language In Education

The need to promote Sign language in institutions on learning was the focus of the Deaf Education Summit in Abuja on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th March 2024.
Sign language was identified as the first language of a person with deafness or hard of hearing.
The need to promote it usage was enphasised by various speakers at the summit. It was recommended that deaf studies and sign language should be a prerequisite course for anyone studying education course or wishes to teach in recognized institution in Nigeria.
The summit was organized by the Nigeria National Association of the Deaf (NNAD). The event had in attendance stakeholders from the education sectors, disability community, international community, USAID, Gallaudet University, USA, among others.
The various challenges faced by deaf in schools were highlighted, as well as recommendations.
