Chief Sam Onuigbo, member, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency in Abia, on Sunday, urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), to embrace sports for self development.
He gave the advice during the inter-platoon sports competition he sponsored at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umunna, Bende Local Government Area, Abia.
Onuigbo, who was represented by his laison officer, Mr Abraham Osondu, described sports as unquestionable means for team building, investment opportunities and invaluable employment.
According to him, sports presents the opportunity to showcase talents, self-confidence, zeal, patience and mutual acknowledgment of each other’s efforts.
“These various skills and/or attributes are essential pre-requisites for academic and organisational developments.
“It is for the aforementioned benefits that I have been driven to sponsor this event,” he said.
Onuigbo said that he had for many years been supporting the NYSC because of his passion for youth and human development.
He lauded the organisers for putting the event together, and congratulated the winning platoons.
In his remarks, the Coordinator of NYSC in Abia, Mr Denis Jingi, commended Onuigbo for always supporting the organisation, describing him as a friend of the scheme.
The state coordinator also appealed to Onuigbo to support the scheme for its health initiative for rural development programme, in area of drug procurement.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Platoon 4 defeated Platoon 3 with a lone goal, to win the football competition, while Platoon 5 beat Platoon 6 in the female volleyball during the grand finale.
NAN reports that the winners, including Platoon 7 that clinched the third place in both competitions, were given trophies and cash prizes. (NAN)
