The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons With Disabilities, Mr James David Lalu has stated that globally Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) experienced most neglect, exclusion and barriers to accessibility to information, health care and others during the outbreak of COVID-19 in recent times.
The ES made this statement during a workshop organized by the Commission in partnership with JEAN JENN Disability Initiative in Abuja. The ES who was represented by the Director Social Integration, NCPWD, Mr Lawrence Idemudia said that Persons with disabilities had to contend with problem of accessibility, even when information where relayed by government agencies..
A major issue is the challenges faced by visually impaired who need to move around by touching objects and requires assisted by others touching or holding them.
Lalu, therefore called on all stakeholders to facilitate capacity building of PWDs in their communities by embracing the Federal Government’s policy of health insurance for PWDs.
Yhe ES reassured members of the Commission’s commitment to continue to protect the interest wellbeing of PWDs.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Executive Director and convener of the programme, Mrs Jean Onyekwelu underpinned the essence of the Workshop to include an avenue to hatch ideas through sensitization in order to build a data bank of NGO’s that will drive the communication model for interacting with Persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
