The National Commission for Persons With Disabilities in Abuja has unveiled a five-year strategic plan to integrate Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) into the society.
The executive Secretary of the commission, David Lalu, said the document is expected to align all stakeholders policies and programmes with the strategic interest of the government to improve the living condition of PWDs.
When speaking to press, James Lalu said that President Buhari has mandates all agencies and organization to include PWDs in policies and programmes and the directives are being implemented.
He said “MDAs, CSOs and international organizations are working in isolation, implementing programmes in isolation, in view of this the commission is working on all efforts, strides and programmes in the country and to document all as achievement of the present administration of President Buhari. This strategic plan is aimed at aligning all activities and programmes by all groups into federal government policies.”
“Soon agencies will be mandated to increase funding on disability to 15%.”
The ES highlighted some achievements of the Commission to include: accessibility provision, quality education, partnering with stakeholders in tertiary education on disability inclusion, disability rights and reducing discrimination to the barest minimum.
Although the Commission has achieved great strides, Lalu lamented that PWDs were still at the receiving end of social and societal discrimination, He said the rate of crimes perpetrated against PWDs was worrisome as they were not given the necessary support by the various communities.
He assured PWDs that the commission remain resolute in making life of members betteer.
Earlier, Dr Toyin Aderemi of Save the Children International described the strategic plan as an operational instrument for the commission to implement the provisions of the Discriminations against Persons Living with Disability Act.
