The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has distributed food items to Special Schools in Abuja. The Executive Secretary (ES), NCPWD, Mr. James Lalu said the food items where part of President Muhammadu Buhari initiative designed to tackle poverty, improve the health and education of children and other vulnerable groups, and reach the United Nation Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger.
The ES who was represented by Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, Director, Social Integration, NCPWD lead the team from the commission that visited various schools in FCT and donated food items to the schools. Some of the institutions visited include School for the Blind, Jabi and School for the Deaf, Kuje, Abuja.
Mr. Lalu explained that the Federal government established the Commission with core mandate to promote, protect and prioritize the rights of persons with disabilities, and to further enhance their productivity through education, health and other socio-economic activities. The commission in keeping with the mandate is aimed at making education attractive and enjoyable for children with disabilities.
He said “the commission in here today representing President Buhari and the Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq on the FG School Feeding Programme and reaching the SDG goal 2 on Zero Hunger.”
“today we bring these items to assist the schools with student feeding. We commend the teachers and non-academic staff working hard in ensuring these children with disabilities are in school and well taught.”
In their remarks, the Head teacher of each school express profound appreciation for the items and promised to use the items judiciously for the children.
The Head teacher, Abuja School for the Blind, Jabi, Mrs. Uganden Rose commend the commission for this generous spirit, at the same time express appreciation to the President and The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development for the initiative of the school feeding programme as this has help alleviate the suffering of the children in school. The team from the commission were graced with beautiful song by the blind students.
In Abuja School for the Deaf, Kuje, the Head Teacher, Rasaq Sorajo, represented by Assistant Head Teacher Admin, Mrs Goodness Johnson and Assistant Head Teacher Academic, Mr. Agura Ezra gave an history of the school from 1991 with 3 deaf students to 624 student in 2022.
The Head teacher, appreciate the commission for this gifts and hope to getting more in future.
The Acting Board Secretary, FCT Universal Basic Education Board Alh. Alhassan Sule represented by Abubakar Mohammed Gomani appreciate the generous gesture of NCPWD. He solicited for well spirited Nigerians to emulate the gesture by the commission by donating items to the over 14 special schools and institutions in various parts of Abuja.
He said “Special schools in Abuja stand out in the country among other Special Schools in maintenance and education qualities.”
“The FCT Universal Basic Education Board should be contacted when anyone have the plan to contribute or donate items to the schools for better coordination”
