The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities yesterday distributed assistive devices to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary, NCPWD, Mr. James Lalu who gave out the items at an event in Abuja noted that the items were  an initiative of the Federal Government to alleviate the suffering of PWDs.

According to him these gestures were were part of President Muhammadu Buhari goal of making Nigeria an inclusive system.

The ES was represented by the Director, Finance and Account, NCPWD, Mr. Jamike Tobias Chijoke. The items distributed include various assistive and empowerment devices, wheelchairs, canes, crutches, walking frames, walking stick, White cane, hair dryers among others.

Mr. Lalu said “the Commission have obtained a number of devices and empowerment aids for persons with disabilities in Nigeria. The recipients and beneficiaries should please put the items to good use.”

“This is just the beginning of good things to come from the Commission, more are to come in the future. This is to make life easy for persons with disabilities. This project is a federal government initiative meant to build an inclusive country for persons with disabilities.

 The commission also has a mission of  working to promote an inclusive society for persons with disabilities through research, advocacy, engagement, mainstreaming, policy development, and enforcement.

Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, Director, Social Integration, NCPWD in his remark appreciated President Buhari and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development for making life better for PWDs in Nigeria.

Mr. Idemudia said “these items are given today to reduce the stress passed through by PWDs in Nigeria. There more items and we will ensureit goes round the country”

In his remark, the National President, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Abdullahi Aliyu Usman commended the Federal Government for this laudable project and challenged members to put to good use the items gifted.

Abdullahi said “we thank the President for signing the disability bill into law and for establishing the Commission. We appreciate the commission for birthing this idea and providing the devices for our members”

“I request all beneficiaries to put the devices to good use, thereby making the Commission happy that their efforts are appreciated”

In response each cluster group represented by Gloria for the physically challenged, Laraba Jonathan for the deaf and Eloka for the blind expressed their appreciation to the Commission for the devices and promised to utilize them well.
