NCPWD Champions Inclusive Development: Empowers Persons With Disabilities Through Renewable Energy Training

 In a bold step toward promoting inclusive development and sustainable livelihoods for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has organized a two-day intensive training on Solar Installation. The program, held at The Meeting Point, Kaura District, Abuja, brought together participants from across the 36 States in Nigeria and was designed to equip PWDs with practical skills in renewable energy.

The training marks another significant milestone in the Commission’s ongoing efforts to empower people with disabilities through innovation, skills acquisition, and economic opportunities.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, the Director of Social Integration at the Commission, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, emphasized the importance of ensuring that no one is left behind in the global shift toward renewable energy.

“This training is more than just a skills development initiative; it is a testament to our unwavering belief that disability is not inability,” said Mr. Idemodia. “We are not only imparting technical know-how but also reinforcing the message that PWDs can and should be central to Nigeria’s economic transformation, especially in emerging sectors like renewable energy.”

Hon. Gufwan, through his representative, commended the Federal Government for its sustained commitment to the rights and empowerment of people with disabilities, describing the initiative as “a forward-thinking step toward ensuring full inclusion and self-reliance.”

“With the right support and access to opportunities, persons with disabilities can become key players in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector—creating jobs, building businesses, and transforming communities,” he affirmed.

The Commission extended its appreciation to BUGOFA Nigeria Limited, the technical trainers and facilitators, and especially the participants, whose enthusiasm and resilience underscore the spirit of true inclusion.

Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Oguntade, the Commission’s Human Resource Director, encouraged the participants to see the training as the beginning of a new journey.

“This is more than just a training session—it is the foundation of a new chapter in your lives,” she said. “You are capable, you are valuable, and you represent the future of a more inclusive and sustainable Nigeria. Embrace this opportunity with passion and purpose.”

The NCPWD reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with stakeholders—including MDAs, NGOs, and private sector actors—to expand access to skill acquisition, employment, and enterprise development for all persons with disabilities.

“On behalf of the Executive Secretary and the management team, we are confident that this initiative will inspire more PWDs to take charge of their destinies,” Mr. Idemudia concluded. “We envision a nation where inclusion is not an afterthought but a foundation for national development.”
