The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has instituted a scholarship scheme programme for students with special needs to enhance their development in life.

Speaking to Inclusion Magazine, the acting Director on Administration and Finance (DAF) Mr Leramoh Abdulrazaq, said there’s a scholarship system where students who perform well in their previous special schools can access higher education in any programmme of their choice.

“We also have a scholarship system in place for children who graduate from these schools, when they perform well and want to pursue higher education anywhere, we support them with our scholarship system.

“For instance, there are some set of children that have just secured approval to attend a school in Lagos. These are special needs children and they have completed their programme at the basic level.”

The acting director disclosed that the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has approved scholarship for students with Special needs to undergo further education, including life skills.

He said, “these are some of the incentives we have on ground to take care of children with special needs in FCT.

Speaking on the measures to check the excessive of some school proprietors, Leramoh Abdulrazaq said, “private investors have to be encouraged and guided on what to do, to avoid creating mushroom schools. To ensure this, we have a whole department, which is the quality assurance department that monitors these schools”.

“In the first place, they regulate, register and license the school. They also monitor the school, by going round the private schools to see what is going on, they observe to see if the schools have conformed with the minimum standard created and where they have not, we ensure that they conform, by giving them all the guidelines”.

“We also have to assist them because if you are punitive, and you just close down schools like that. What happens to children in that environment? So we are conscious of this. We are working with them more like partners to ensure that the right quality is achieved in all the private schools in FCT”.
