Medical facilities in Abuja have designed and implemented policies to improve accessibility for women and girls with disability. This was made known by Bukola Azeez, head, Public Private Partnership Unit, Health & Human Services, FCT, Abuja. She made the remark during an event organized by Deaf Women Aloud Initiative (DWAI) in Abuja.
Bukola Azeez explained that FCT administration, in collaboration with DWAI, MWAN and other stakeholders have trained medical staff in Abuja on disability and accessibility in hospitals in Abuja. She explained that a sign language glossary was also produced and distributed to members to enhance communication with deaf in the case of medical emergencies especially for Deaf Women and Girls, Bukola Azeez while appreciating the collaboration and support from DWAI, explained that the FCT Administration seeks to collaborate with stakeholders in training sign language interpreters on medical terminologies as this will make communications between medical officials and deaf seamless and understandable. She explained that medical terminologies are very different from regular vocabularies used in day to day sign language interpreting.
Bukola Azeez stated that disability and sign language studies is to be included in curriculum of School of Nursing and other medical school. she explained further that this is to make medical workers to be well informed of the rights, needs and ways to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities. In her remark, Dr. AIsha Umar, President, Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) seek for collaboration with relevant stakeholders in Public and Private Partnership in empowering medical staff and facilities in Abuja to be accessible by persons with disabilities.
Members of the medical communities were encouraged to share experiences in service system, practice intervention and successful health care procedures to enable member improve their skills in delivering efficient service to Persons with Disabilities.
