Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons With Disabilities, James David Lalu has said that the five years warning period for provision of accessible ways for Persons With Disabilities to ply will soon elapse and the Commission will begin to seal all public buildings that do not comply with the Persons With Disabilities Act which mandates provision of accessible ways at all public buildings.

Lalu said this at the maiden conference of the Nigerian Bar Association Lawyers With Disabilities Forum.

He mainted that lawyers with disabilities are playing crucial role in ensuring the domestication and implementation of the Act and therefore deserve important consideration when enforcing it.

The Executive Secretary stated that his office will work on full assessment of the Nigeria Bar Association headquarters to ensure the building complies with the law before commencement of the enforcement.

He added that by 2023, the National Commission for Persons With Disabilities will host Access to Justice Disability Summit. He solicited for the support of the NBA in making the summit a reality.

In his speech, president of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mai Kyau assured the Executive Secretary of his absolute support and that of his members towards ensuring that accessibility in public buildings becomes everyone’s concern.

Mai Kyau  Hassan applauded Lalu for the good work he is doing for Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria.

He added that he is ever ready to partner the Commission in hosting the Access to Justice Disability Summit.
