ActionAid Nigeria has revealed that Global Affairs Canada may disburse another 15.75million Canadian dollars to Nigeria for the implementation of the second phase of the Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria Project (WVLN).
The funding is an addition to the 10million Canadian Dollars provided for the implementation of the first phase of the project implemented in 6 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from 2019-2025.
The Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, Andrew Mamedu, disclosed this at the closing ceremony of the (WVLN) project.
He said the Action Aid Nigeria is in talks with Global Affairs Canadian to provide the additional sun so as to further reach to more women group.
Speaking on the major achievements of the WLV-N project, Mamedu stated that they worked with 100 women-led organisations and has disbursed 191 grants to about 182 women led organisations across 24 states.
The participating states include Enugu, Cross River, Kebbi, Bauchi, Kwara and the Federal Capital Territory.
Other achievements included formulation of 47 women’s rights legislations, influencing 190 women to become members traditional leadership positions, supported 9,036 victims of gender based violence survivors and several other achievements.
He disclosed that for the next phase they look forward to working with more women’s rights group, we will work with widows, organisations led by young feminist as well as women with disabilities.
The Representative of the Canadian High Commission Jamie Christoff explained that the project represents a significant milestone in empowering women by addressing sexual and gender based violence, both online and physical, and enhancing their access to education, economic opportunities and healthcare.
According to her, these efforts are critical in overcoming major barriers to women’s full participation in political, social and economic spheres, enabling them to lead, influence and contribute meaningfully to all areas of society.
“We have seen encouraging and in some instances, historic participation of women in leadership positions in Nigeria,” she said.
She assured that the high commission will continue to ensure they incorporate a gender perspective in all our projects
The Minister of Women Affairs, Bar. Uju Kennedy commended Action Aid Nigeria for their supportive in the areas of violence against women and girls, women’s political participation,Inherent leadership and negotiation skills to address overwhelming issues of governance in their communities, state and the country in general, which earlier defied previous efforts.
