Aisha Buhari Donates 350 Bales Of Second-Hand Clothes To Orphanages, Less-Privileged

The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari has donated 350 bales of second–hand clothing, known in local slang as gwanjo or okrika, to disadvantaged people in some northern states.

Although it is not clear if the first lady imported the clothes, the import and sale of second-hand clothes is prohibited in the country.

NIGERIAN Daily gathered that the bundles were distributed through the first lady’s foundation, Future Assured, to other non-governmental organizations, NGOs, in Kano, Katsina, Adamawa, Zamfara and Kaduna states.

It was also found that the NGOs in turn distributed the items to the less favored.

An official from one of the NGOs in Kano, Sani Lawan, told the NIGERIAN DAILY that the state had received most of the goods, while a small amount had been distributed to Katsina, Kaduna, Adamawa and Zamfara states.

According to him, each of the selected NGOs had received four bales, adding that most of the bales contain children’s winter clothing to protect them from the cold weather.

In addition to NGOs, Mr. Lawan also said that the products were also distributed to some orphanages and psychiatric hospitals in Kano.

“In addition to NGOs, some orphanages and psychiatric hospitals benefited. Each NGO has received 4 bales and there are some small amounts to send to Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara and Adamawa.

“As I speak to you, the clothes are being distributed within Kano city, but we will send a small amount to some villages in the state.

“Due to this cold weather, the First Lady saw fit to help vulnerable people, who might not have the money to buy harmattan garments. For me it is a good initiative,” said the official.

When contacted, the First Lady’s spokesman, Aliyu Abdullahi, said he was not aware of his director’s donation.

However, he said some politicians also organize empowerment programs on behalf of the first lady without even her knowledge.
