Advocacy for Women With Disabilities Initiative, AWWDI has trained some 40 women with Disabilities to amplify the campaign against Gender Based Violence, GBV.
The training, part of an AWWDI project tagged: “The Amplify Visibility and Voice Project” held on Wednesday with support from Disability Rights Fund.
In an interview with the press, Executive Director of AWWDI, Mrs. Patience Dickson disclosed that the training emphasized on Women and Girls With Disabilities – with special focus on violence against these vulnerable gender. It adopts simplified versions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, (UNCRPD), the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP) and the National Policy on Sexual and Reproductive Health And Rights of Persons With Disabilities.
According to Dickson: “the training was organized to charge women and girls with disabilities to speak up against Gender Based Violence whenever necessary.”
Dickson continues: “with the recent conclusion of the 16 Days activism against GBV, it is only right that such training is staged so the voices of these women with disabilities be heard.”
She notes: “this training was conducted to enlighten WWDs on the specific violence and abuses WGWDs face while improving insights on their rights. They also learn how they should rise against GBV”
Participants were tutored on strategies for advocacy on Violence Against Women and Girls With Disabilities.
A participant, Miss Uchenna Madueke remarked that the training provided her opportunity to learn new strategies for addressing issues of GBV against WWDs.
Another participant, Malama Maryam Maliafiya said the training enlightened her on right responses to Gender Based Violence against Women and Girls With Disabilities.
Trainees are expected to use knowledge gained to become voices for other WWDs. They are to advise them on right steps to handling the situation, reporting perpetrators to appropriate authorities and speaking out against GBV.
