The National Orientation Agency has called on Nigerians to support and collaborate with the Agency in ensuring Persons with Disabilities have access to basic health facilities in the society. The Director General National Orientation Agency, Dr. Garba Abari made the call during a program organized by Deaf Women Aloud Initiative (DWAI) in Abuja.
The DG, NOA who was represented by Grace Mama, Chief Program Officer, PWD, Public Enlightenment and Mass Mobilization, NOA, explained that the Agency has commenced public awareness on the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act. “NOA has prioritized and embarked on enlightenment programme with relevant stakeholders on Disabilities which include Centre for Citizens and Disabilities (CCD) to advocate and promote full implementation of the Act”, The DG, NOA said.
Dr. Abari stated that the Agency is determined to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities in the country.
He explained that the Agency mandate is to create awareness and sensitize citizens on government policies, activities, programmes and promoting positive values. In view of the forgoing, Abari, enumerate activities and programmes targeted at engaging stakeholders on the content of the Act towards eliciting understanding and responsiveness.
“it is important to note that the Act clearly spelt out inclusion of persons with disabilities including DWAI , into every sector of the society and provide for the setup of the Disability Commission that is in charge of disability education, health, transportation, employment , social, economic and other Human Rights Provisions.
“no one, no matter the circumstance of birth, gender, of disability is to be left behind. NOA is therefore calling on Nigerians to come on board this moving train seeking inclusion for persons with disabilities and particularly deaf women.
