ActionAid Nigeria has expressed concern that in Nigeria, as in many parts of the world, climate change compounds the vulnerabilities faced by women in conflict-affected areas, making their roles and contributions even more critical.
The Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, noted this at the National Roundtable on Loss and Damage Impacts on Women in Fragile and Conflict-Affected states and award ceremony for the Women Climate Champion Award in Abuja with the theme: “Loss and Damage Impacts on Women in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States”.
According to him, the theme reflects the pressing need to address the intersection of gender and climate change. In Nigeria, as in many parts of the world.
He said they aim to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary impact of women in climate action.
“The Women Climate Champion Award is not just a recognition, but a celebration of the remarkable contributions made by women, individuals, and organizations in the realm of climate action.
“Through this annual award, we aim to honor those who have made substantial strides in addressing climate-related challenges, advocating for gender equality, and building resilience in their communities.
“The Women Climate Champion Award will spotlight those whose work has led to meaningful, positive changes in the lives of women and communities.
“We will also explore innovative approaches that challenge traditional methods and foster sustainability for long-term impact.
“Our goal is to influence national and regional policies, ensuring that they are informed by the realities faced by women in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.
“Through these discussions, we hope to strengthen networks and collaborations among stakeholders, fostering a collective effort towards gender-responsive climate action.
“Advancing gender equality and climate action is vital to building a more just and resilient world.Together, let us take this opportunity to not only celebrate achievements but also to ignite further action, advocacy, and collaboration.
” By doing so, we can ensure that the critical role of women in addressing climate change is acknowledged and celebrated, paving the way for a more inclusive and effective response to this global challenge,” he said.
Also, the Director General/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike represented by it
Principal Meteorologist, Blessing Aganbi said it last report on climate change, revealed that women are more affected and over 8million women were displaced.
” So, we are talking about issues of unwanted pregnancy. We’re talking about out of school children. Places like Adamawa state, they’ve asked children to stay at home, so the girls and the women are affected,” she said.
She said NiMet is happy to partner with ActionAid to foster collective effort towards gender-responsive climate action.
