The Agro-Processing Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS Project), has trained 100 people living with disabilities on various farming skills in Kano to enable them become independent and resourceful.
The five days training which held at Royal Tropicana Hotel by the Faculty of Agriculture, Bayero University Kano, equipped the beneficiaries with life skill training on financial and marketing on Aquaculture, Poultry, Rice and Wheat value chains, under the Women and Youth Empowerment Programme (WAYEP).
Speaking during the graduation ceremony, the State Project Coordinator of the APPEALS, Mallam Hassan Ibrahim said after the training, each of the beneficiaries will receive inputs of his selected value chain worth N2 million as a capital.
He said in line with the APPEALS project policy to engage physically challenged people to become independent, the programme carefully selected 100 out of 225 of people that applied for the support.
While assuring that they will soon get alert in their accounts, the SPC said “We always consider you as very important people that is why we addressed you as People With Special Needs. You are very lucky today to be part of this programme and very soon we will register you with CAC, open your bank accounts and you will receive alerts of N2 million each.
He appealed to them to take good advantage of the programme and establish themselves to become business owners and even employ others.
On his part, the dean Faculty of Agriculture, Bayero University, Professor A.B Muhammad charged the beneficiaries to use the skill they were taught in the training to build their various businesses.
He maintain that the APPEALS project have impacted many life and remain a source of livelihood to many people in the country, adding that Kano is always in the lead.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the chairman of the joint association of the people with special need, Engineer Musa Shaga thanked the APPEALS project for giving them the opportunity to be part of the life changing programme, assuring that they will use the opportunity judiciously to build themselves.
Also speaking, the chairlady of the women with disabilities, Rabi Yusuf said APPEALS has done everything to them and that they will ensure nobody diverted the money to something different.
During the graduation ceremony, certificates have been awarded to the participants, Para soccer competition was held to improve livelihood of the trainees.
