The Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, says the government is determined to use sports to eradicate poverty in the country.
He said this in Abuja yesterday at the 13th conference of Rotary District 9125.
He said the ministry had proposed a new national sports policy that would improve sports development and increase investment in the sports infrastructure.
“Sports is one of the things that unite us in this country. So, we want to bring everybody under one umbrella because sports can be used to eradicate poverty, hunger and used to achieve universal primary education.
“Also, gender equality can be achieved through sports and to promote peace in any community. Therefore, we’ll see changes in the actions of our youths.”
The governor of District 9125, Ayoola Oyedokun, said under him, membership of the district had grown.
He said this had allowed the district to serve more communities in Nigeria.
Oyedokun said with the major focus on girl-child employment as well as water and sanitation to rural communities, the district had engaged in over 600 projects.
