President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commenced making good his promise to build a renewed Nigeria by empowering Nigerians with disabilities. Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) gathered in the nation’s capital, celebrating a dawn of a new era as the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation rolled out empowerment programs, scholarships to PWDs in tertiary institutions and awards to disability groups and organisations.
The empowerment program was launched in Abuja by the Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Beta Edu.
Dr. Edu assured Nigerians with disabilities that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu campaign promises to lift Nigerians out of poverty is a promise that will surely be fulfilled.
She said “there should be no hindrance from stopping anyone from reaching his or her full potentials and there should be no bottleneck in the process of inclusion.
“we recognize that disability does not define a person. The empowerment program today therefore, is a beckon of hope. Illuminating a path to a more inclusive and equitable society. This program is not merely providing assistance but to empower individuals to be productive members of the society, thereby contributing to national development.”
The Executive Secretary, NCPWD, James Lalu in his welcome address applauded the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led administration for involving and appointing PWDs into political offices.
The president recently has signed the Instrument of Ratification of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa, which was adopted by the Thirtieth Ordinary Session of the Assembly, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the 29th day of January, 2018.
Mr. Lalu explained that the government is making good his promise of lifting Nigerian families from poverty.
The ES said “The President has promised the disability community a renew hope. He has recently signed the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa.
“It is evident that the president is ready to provide more opportunities for PWDs in Nigeria.
“the appointment of one of us as Senior Special Adviser to the President confirms just that. And more things are coming to us PWDs and our communities.
“Today, we are here to distribute empowerments to PWDs. It is a request from the disability communities. We are giving out POS machines and start up grants to PWDs, scholarships to student and grants to disability groups and organization.”
In his goodwill message, the Founder and President of TAF Africa, Jake Epelle express Nigerian readiness to tap into the huge opportunities available to PWDs in the international levels. He appreciates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing PWDs into political offices and requested for more of such appointments.
