Not fewer than 12 volunteered lawyers have been trained and empowered to offer free legal services to all clusters of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Anambra State.

The Pro Bono legal team supported by International IDEA- Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC II) programme, a European Union funded project, would work under the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ANSDRC) with a view to ensure fully implementation of the State Disability Rights Law 2018.

The Anambra State Coordinator, International IDEA- Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC II) programme, Mrs Josephine Onah, who disclosed this at Awka during a one-day sensitisation and awareness campaign, explained that the team were trained at Abuja.

The legal team would also through its hotlines: +2349036412791 and email, ansdrc@gmail.com, provide 24 hours free legal support to the blind and visual impaired, albinism, physically challenged, hearing impaired, sickle cell sufferers and vulnerable persons so as to ensure they secure access to justice against all forms of discriminations and abuse.

Onah, who commended the disability rights commission for their sincerity and passion to provide improved service delivery to the PWDs, assured them that the RoLAC programme II would never relent in providing support for inclusivity and strengthening of institutional framework geared towards improved access to justice and rule of law.

On his part, the Chairman, Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ANSDRC), Barr. Chuks Ezewuzie, commended RoLAC over its commitment to full operationalization of the disability rights law and urged the media to join in sensitising the public about its key provisions because according to him, anyone abusing or denying PWDs access to justice would be prosecuted accordingly.

Ezewuzie further revealed that governor Chukwuma Soludo in his solution vision had not only digitalised the commission but also empowered them to setup structures across political wards, villages, communities and Local Government Areas, adding that they would also collaborate with traditional rulers, presidents general, and other community leaders to ensure that the law worked perfectly.

The commission boss, while unveiling the legal team and key provisions of the law, charged the heads of different clusters of PWDs to help stepdown the message to their community members, adding that they should without fear or favour report any form of discrimination and infringement on their rights by any person, group of persons, communities, companies or associations, to the team and gain instant access to justice on pro bono even on repugnant cultural practices affecting them.

In separate goodwill messages, the Anambra State Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, the leader of women wing of the Association, Comrade Nwanokwara Ncheta, Mr Ernest Okamelu of the blind community, Mr Ndubueze Ezemba of the deaf community, Mr Ben Orizu of Albinism community and Mrs Aisha Edwards-Maduagwu of Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) expressed their support to the initiatives.
