In a significant step towards fostering an inclusive digital society, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has launched a three-day training workshop on Basic ICT and Digital Skills for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The event, which commenced today at the prestigious Barcelona Hotel in Abuja, brought together selected PWD representatives from various clusters across the country.
The training, organized in collaboration with Meteorite Logistics Limited and the Department of Information and Communication Technology of the Commission, aims to equip participants with vital digital competencies that are essential for education, employment, and social integration in today’s digital age.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, Mr. Idemudia Lawrence emphasized the transformative potential of digital inclusion. “Today marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards a truly inclusive and equitable society,” he stated. “In an increasingly digital world, access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and proficiency in digital skills are no longer a luxury but a fundamental necessity.”
Hon. Gufwan noted that the empowerment of PWDs through digital skills is crucial to building their capacity for self-employment, innovation, and active participation in the digital economy. “For far too long, PWDs have faced disproportionate barriers in accessing technology and quality digital education—from financial limitations to the lack of accessible infrastructure. This training program is a direct response to those challenges,” he said.
He further underscored that the initiative is not just about technical skill acquisition but about fostering genuine digital inclusion. “We believe that by empowering PWDs with in-demand ICT skills, we are not only enhancing individual employability but also contributing to national development and entrepreneurship.”
Hon. Gufwan expressed his appreciation to the Commission’s ICT Department and Meteorite Logistics Limited for their commitment to making the programme a success and for providing a conducive environment for learning.
