Ayuba Gufwan, the Executive Secretary National Commission for Persons with Disabilities has affirmed that the visually impaired Persons should be considered in the development of curricular of higher Institutions in Nigeria.
The ES made this statement in Abuja during a familiarization visit to the National Commission for Colleges of Education, yesterday 11th October, 2024.
In his address, the Executive Secretary highlighted the challenges that students with visual impairment face at the entry level while seeking admission with basic requirements into higher Institutions.
“Please permit me to mention that certain subjects such as mathematics have become a major impediment for blind students who wish to study sciences or related Disciplines due to their conditions, he said.
Gufwan relayed the Commission’s readiness to partner with NCCE for better considerations at the screening stage of admissions of Persons with disabilities into various tertiary Institutions.
In his welcome remarks, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education, Prof. Paulinus Chijioke Okwelle stated that the Organization is a regulatory body for Colleges of Education in Nigeria. He said that the Commission regulates over 200 higher Institutions of learning in Nigeria.
Prof Okwelle also used the occasion to underscore the roles of the Commission on the overall growth of the country.
According to him, the growth of a Nation depends on the level of Education of its population. “No Nation can rise above the capacity of its education” he opined.
He also said that in the Schools’ curriculum under review, that NCPWD is expected to have specific inputs.
He, however, promised to examine all the barriers and take the necessary steps to correct the areas of discrimination against Persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
