The Executive Secretary, National Commission For Persons With Disabilities, James Lalu has commiserated with flood victims in Nigeria.
Mr. Lalu stated that in the event of emergency, PWDs should be given priority and assistance in evacuation.
The ES made the statement in the Commission social media handle (facebook).
“I commiserate with Persons with Disabilities living in Nigeria affected by flood.
“It should be known that the Commission, along with the National Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, is working towards every possible means to cater for them.
“I had earlier called on frontline humanitarian actors in this regard to always consider Persons with Disabilities first and give priority to them when evacuating affected people.
“Persons with Disability across the affected states can contact the Commission through our 24/7 rapid response WhatsApp hotline: +2347015370083 when there is need for evacuation.
“The National Commission For Persons With Disabilities is working very closely with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) towards ensuring that no life of Person With Disability is lost to this disaster.
“Our essential team at the Commission is fully ready, working 24/7 to ensure that affected Persons with Disabilities are evacuated at any location.
“I therefore urge the community to remain calm as we continue working towards providing humanitarian assistance and protecting the lives of all Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria.
“I will also like to use this opportunity to sympathize with parents and the Ugandan Government over the fire outbreak at a school for the Blind Children in Mukono, Kampala on Tuesday morning which led to the loss of lives of Persons with Disabilities.
“May the Almighty have mercy upon them and grant the parents the fortitude to bear the loss. “
